Big Data Intelligence (BDI) ... The Technology Generalists Dream.
I have been a technology generalist for a long time. I have never really focused on one technology … mostly because I have “Technology ADHD”. I have to know everything that makes what I do and touch tick … so I know just enough about everything to make me dangerous. I kinda code, I kinda engineer, I kinda rack and stack, I kinda admin, I kinda … the list goes on.
For a time recently I thought that was a bad career move, until I was tapped by our new BDI (Big Data Intelligence) Practice started at my company.
With my overall knowledge and hands-on experience in so many areas it has prepared me very well as a PS and Architecture guy in the Big Data space.
Basically, I can take an overall architecture for a BDI project and stand it up on my own; from the rack and stack of the hardware, installing OS, configuring hadoop all the way to the programming for the tools to ETL the data … and I am finding this to be invaluable and rare so far. There seems to be a ton of chiefs in the BDI space and not a ton of indians. The indians that are out there seem to just be able to shoot bow and arrows, skin animal or cook … they can’t seem to bring the meal to the table on their own.
I still have a TON to learn … but this is truly the first time in a LONG time I’ve been excited about what I am doing. I can’t wait to see where this takes me.
