Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable
This week I had the pleasure of sharing some of my life story in front of 100+ Trace3’s finest at our TKO on how circumstances in my life have helped me to become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
All I have to say is “WHOA!” .. I have a whole new respect for speakers that get vulnerable and transparent in front of an audience of any size. I couldn’t believe the feelings it brought up in me. It really took me off-guard how incredibly hard it was. It was amazing how uncomfortable it made me.
I wanted to show the audience you need to “Be Comfortable with getting Uncomfortable” to get to the next level; professional, personally, spiritually .. etc.
Here’s a quick summary ..
——
For me the 2 ingredients that have been part of my recipe for getting out of my comfort zone successfully are:
A Catalyst
An event, scenario or something people said that forced me to get out of my comfort zone ..
“You’re a high school dropout .. with no education .. you can’t be successful ..”
Or even things I would say to myself .. “You are terrible at public speaking .. you’ll never be able to do it.”
While those things can be a great driving force to just prove someone or even yourself wrong, it’s not enough to keep the momentum to the end. I realized there is one ingredient that was more important to the recipe of being successful with coming out of your comfort zone.
Having a Mentor
Find someone that has been through it. Someone that has been successful at doing what you want to accomplish. Someone to push you out of your comfort zone and to the next level. When you have someone like that, pushing you along .. it makes the easier to be comfortable with the uncomfortable and helps to mitigate the risk, because your mentor has seen it before and you can learn from their life lessons.

So, while this speech wasn’t my best speaking performance to date, I wouldn’t change it for anything. It’s just something else to get me out of my comfort zone.
I can’t wait to do it again.
